You Never Get a Second Chance to Make a First Impression

A while back, I was flattered to receive a request to participate in the Development Debrief with Kathryn Van Sickle. Kathryn has interviewed titans of the philanthropy industry, and it was an honor to share my area of expertise with her audience.

We discussed the topic of interviewing, and she asked me to provide tips and techniques candidates can use to stand out from the crowd. We covered various topics, from how to answer challenging interview questions to the importance of thank you notes.

As we approach the end of the calendar year and begin looking at new beginnings, we thought it would be beneficial to revisit the topic of interview techniques. Oscar Wilde and Will Rodgers have been credited with the phrase, “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” And isn’t that what an interview is, making a first impression?

I believe the advice shared in the podcast works on both sides of the desk (or Zoom screen). Interviewee’s will discover how to share their wealth of experience in the most thorough yet brief way possible, and hiring managers will learn what to listen for in the candidate’s response.

Happy listening, and I would enjoy hearing your thoughts on the topics Kathryn and I discussed.
