Envision Partners with the City of Wichita to Impact Transportation Experiences

Envision Vision Rehabilitation Center recently renewed an agreement with the City of Wichita Transportation. Through this partnership, we can assist blind or visually impaired individuals with their application to receive approval for door-to-door transportation to work and other vital appointments. We are also equipped to train staff and assist the City of Wichita with sighted guide services and understanding the blind or visually impaired traveler.

This long-standing relationship between Envision and Wichita Transportation has recently experienced incredible teamwork that has resulted in resolved client transportation issues and misunderstandings. Ray Oddis, Orientation and Mobility Specialist at Envision, has worked closely with Raven Alexander, Transportation Coordinator at the City of Wichita Transportation. Our successful partnership has ensured that many Wichita residents who are blind or visually impaired have transportation available.

The effort to assist with transportation also extends further. Ray Oddis will work one-on-one with individuals to build a comprehensive transit plan. One that starts in their home and helps them get to bus stations, work, grocery stores and more. Oddis helps people build independence and confidence, aiding them in navigating sidewalks, crosswalks, and other environmental situations.

One example of how the transit service has impacted lives comes from Envision’s lead accessibility scientist, Rakesh Badu. “The City of Wichita’s Paratransit Service has been crucial to leading an independent and dignified life,” states Badu. “I rely on it for commuting to work, running errands, visiting parks and recreation facilities, and going to appointments. The transit staff are compassionate, accommodating and they have even become great friends. Recently, I had an issue with my transit application and was concerned about my ability to receive services. The staff at Envision, along with the staff at the City of Wichita, resolved the issue quickly and I had no disruption in service. I am thankful to all of them.”

On May 18, 2021, Envision recognized the work of Raven Alexander with an award of gratitude and a certificate of recognition. This acknowledgment highlights her commitment and effort to assist individuals who are blind or visually impaired in maintaining their paratransit service. Stacy Fuller, Director of Envision Rehabilitation Services & Support Programs, along with Ray Oddis, presented the award. The City of Wichita transportation staff and management were also present. When Ms. Alexander accepted her award, she was quick to speak to the teamwork of the City of Wichita transportation team and the Envision partnership to bring forth her ability to do her job with such success.
